Libraries give us a green light to experience something truly special: a place to connect with others, learn new skills, and pursue our passions through book clubs, storytimes, crafting classes, lectures, and more. SMPL offers a wide array of programs, classes, and resources, including computer and literacy classes, hands on Red Kits to learn everything from how to play the Ukulele to baking a pie, and loads of online learning tools. And libraries play a pivotal role in economic development by providing resources and support for job seekers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. SMPL regularly partners with community organizations to offer job hunting help, tax preparation assistance, and mental health support. We in Santa Monica are fortunate to have had strong support for our five-library system. While many continue to value and love our libraries, it is difficult to understand why hours and staffing are still significantly reduced. Wait times for materials are longer and access to certain branches is limited. We acknowledge that this is due to a slow recovery, as well as other factors impacting the City’s general fund budget. And although we are not yet at full operation for all locations, our library staff has found ways to bring back programs and reactivate the libraries as community hubs. On behalf of the Library Board, which continues to advocate to the City Council for increased funding to open and staff all branches, I invite you to come and explore, be inspired, and connect with others this National Library Week.
